Detectable warning tape depth must distinguish the tape position below finished grade from its vertical separation above the protected utility. Two Reference Lines Control Every Depth Record

A burial-depth value is incomplete unless its reference is stated. Which Document Decides the Installed Elevation?

The controlling position should come from the approved drawing, utility-owner specification, authority requirement, or contract document. Product test data can support field verification, but it should not override the specified elevation or be transferred from another route without project confirmation.

Detectable Construction Changes the Test, Not the Governing Depth

A foil-laminated detectable warning tape uses a continuous metallic layer within a protective polymer construction. Creases, punctures, and discontinuity require inspection before burial.

Where a defined conductive path is required, warning tape with tracer wire adds a conductor whose joints, terminations, and connection points must remain continuous.

How the Position Is Measured on Site

  1. Confirm the approved final-grade or pavement reference.
  2. Record the top-of-utility elevation after the utility is accepted in position.
  3. Calculate the tape elevation from the governing separation or section detail.
  4. Place the specified initial backfill without sharp material against the warning structure.
  5. Lay the tape over the route and avoid folds, punctures, or displacement.
  6. Measure both depth references, photograph the installation, and complete the record before testing.

What a Detection Result Does Not Prove

A successful locator pass confirms only the recorded product, depth, soil, moisture, equipment, and operator condition. Tested detection depth is not the required installation depth; tensile strength is not mechanical protection; wider tape does not automatically create a deeper locator range; and continuity on an unopened roll does not confirm every installed joint or future condition.

Conditions That Can Change the Recorded Result

Pavement thickness, road base, later grading, erosion, soil moisture, aggregate size, and compaction can change cover or locator response.

Wide trenches, parallel services, or shared corridors may require detectable warning mesh where a narrow strip does not provide sufficient route coverage.

Metallic pipes, cables, reinforcement, and nearby services may cause signal coupling. Record locator mode, frequency, grounding, gain, test direction, and operator method so the result can be interpreted and repeated.

Representative Trial Section

For an unverified structure or site condition, prepare a short representative trench using the proposed product, depth, backfill, utility arrangement, and locator setup.

Measure both depth references, test several points and directions, and record soil moisture, frequency, grounding, and operator. Inspect folds, edge damage, open joints, displacement, and signal interruption. Correct any mismatch while the installation remains accessible, then repeat only at project-defined stages where compaction or moisture could materially change the result.
