Truck tractor rear reflective tape requirements mark the tractor's width from behind. FMVSS No. 108 S8.2.4.1 calls for two strips of retroreflective sheeting or conspicuity reflectors, each at least 600 mm long, near the rear fenders, mudflaps or mudflap support brackets. They are mounted as horizontal as practicable in a rear-facing vertical plane. When reflective tape is installed on truck mudflaps, it must not be lower than 300 mm below the mudflap's upper horizontal edge.

Inspect both sides from directly behind after mudflap, bracket or equipment work. Confirm the material still faces rearward, remains properly located and is not blocked by lamps or hardware.

What Could Have Disappeared With It?

An illustrative maintenance scenario for fleet inspection

Consider a routine repair: a damaged mudflap is replaced, but its reflective strip leaves with the old part. The tractor may be mechanically ready while one lower-rear conspicuity element is missing. Pre-trip and maintenance checks should therefore revisit locations disturbed by repair work, not only judge whether the remaining tape still looks bright.

After mudflap, bracket, body-panel or paint work, check for missing material, dirty, faded or peeling reflective tape, torn sections, overspray and new hardware that obscures required areas. Clean contamination and reinspect visibility. Record vehicle ID, repair location, material identification, installation date and batch data where available. Repeated edge lifting across several tractors may indicate a preparation or material-selection problem rather than isolated damage.
